St. Petersburg / Pushkin

A journey to St. Petersburg leads visitors into a world of 18th and 19th century Tsars, a world of art, Dostoyevsky and Tolstoi, of a thousand canals and wrought-iron bridges. This historic city is surrounded by the beauty of true Russian nature and magical fairy-tale forests.

In the centre of St. Petersburg lies the Nevsky Prospect, the main street in the city, offering shops, bookshops, cafes and restaurants, as well as home-grown fruit and vegetable stalls.
The famous Hermitage Museum, which includes the Winter Palace, is situated at the end of the Nevsky Prospect. This museum is one of the oldest in the world, and was proclaimed a state museum after the October Revolution of 1917.

Pushkin is the most beautiful and noble district in St. Petersburg. The wonderful Catherine Palace, where the Russian President welcomes his guests, houses the world-famous Amber Room. The original chamber was looted during the war, and its whereabouts are still unknown. From Pushkin, visitors can travel with the Elektrichka railway to the surrounding villages, lakes and forests.
Winter in St. Petersburg is particularly beautiful, covered in snow just like a winter fairytale.
This part of the city has many advantages. It is only a few minutes away
from the host families and can be reached very easily by public transport or
on foot.

The school

Our language courses are run by our Director Julia who has a great sense of humour. Julia and her staff use modern methods and have many years of experience in teaching Russian as a foreign language. Our school maintains high standards and offers specialised business courses, catering for students of all ages and learning backgrounds.
The lessons take place in our small school in Pushkin's town centre, which has 6 classrooms. The locals are very hospitable and you might find yourself taking part in a spontaneous picnic and get-together after the lessons.

Students receive individual attention from all the staff as well as their host families. Excursions and picnics are organised with Julia in nearby villages. Students can enjoy trips into the countryside using the very reasonably-priced railway. Courses are aimed at both younger and more mature students. A large selection of books can be found in Dom Knigi on Nevsky Prospect. In terms of food, Borsch (Beetroot soup) and bread is served in almost every family. Caviar (red and black) can be bought relatively cheaply.

Sightseeing in St. Petersburg, Pushkin

Pushkin used to be one of the Russian ruler’s country seats, decorated with sculptures, pavilions and palaces. The Palace of St. Catherine the Great now holds a large selection of jewellery, furniture, paintings as well as porcelain and weapons.

St. Petersburg, the 'Venice of the North’, is only 15 minutes away by public transport. Built on over 40 isles which are joined by 350 bridges, this metropolis is a must-see. The heart of the town is home to the Winter Palais, the Ministry and Alexander’s Column, which displays paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and many other artists.
We recommend a visit to Isaac Square in front of Isaac Cathedral which is one of the most beautiful monuments from the 19th century.
St. Petersburg has over 140 museums: we recommend visiting the Hermitage and the Church of the Resurrection.

Accommodation

Family: Single rooms (SR) with half board (HB). Our families are incredibly welcoming and helpful. Average distance from the language centre: 15 minutes by public transport.

Hotel Natali***: Double (DR) or single room (SR) with breakfast (B&B) in this recently renovated hotel. All rooms are ensuite and equipped with TV, telephone, hairdryer, safe and minibar. Double rooms cannot be booked for single occupancy. Distance from the language centre: around 5 minutes on foot.

Hotel Ekaterina****: Double room (DR) with breakfast (B&B). A surcharge of 510 € per week is payable for a single room with breakfast (B&B). Double rooms can only be booked by two persons booking and travelling together. The hotel is beautifully located inside the Palace of Catherine the Great. Very clean. All rooms are ensuite with TV and air-conditioning. Distance from the language centre: around 20 minutes on foot.

Visa information

A visa for entry into Russia is normally be required, which you can apply for at the Russian Embassy. The Russian authorities require health insurance. For more information please contact us. To check your personal visa requirements, please visit www.russianembassy.co.uk.

After your arrival in St. Petersburg you must register with the local authorities. The registration fee is around 40 €. Further information can be obtained from our language school in Pushkin.

Travel

The nearest airport is in St. Petersburg. Transfers to and from the host families are included in the price. Transfers for arrival and departure by train can be booked for 30 € each way. For further information, please contact our staff.
